Replacement Window Handle The Process Isn't As Hard As You Think

Choosing uPVC Replacement Window Handles

Window handles are an integral part of uPVC frames and must match the frame that is currently in use. The most important factor is the spindle's length which determines if the new uPVC handle will fit.

Use the table below as a quick reference to determine the spindle length of your uPVC handle. This will help you choose the correct replacement window handle for your double-glazed window.

Espag Handle

Espag handles are commonly found on Upvc (but they're also used in timber and aluminium). They feature an oval spindle that extends from the back of the handle, and is inserted into the multi-point lock mechanism which is attached to the window. The handle is used to control the locking mechanism around the window.

Espag window handles are available in a variety of styles and functions. Some come with an option to push a button for locking closed, and key-locking. (And nonlocking for fire escape in the event of need.) Many of them meet the Secure by design specifications for an added level of security. They also come with various sizes of spindles, which can be altered by using spindle sleeves to reduce the size of protruding spindles.

Yale has tested the espagnolette handles we provide to ensure they meet the requirements you'd expect. They work with upvc windows as well as timber windows and frames made of aluminium. We have a range of colours, and can match the handle with your hinges.

Another crucial aspect of espagnolette handles is their step height. This is the distance from the bottom of the handle up to where it is placed on the frame, and it's crucial to make sure it's right to ensure a tight and secure fit. Fortunately, most of our handle styles are in line with industry standards, with 43mm between the screw hole centres.

Like other types of handles you have the choice between straight and Cranked designs. Cranked handles are perfect for situations where the espagnolette handle will be placed close to the frame's edge because they provide more space to open the window.

Cockspur Handle

The Cockspur Window Handle was created for those who manufacture windows and want to provide their customers with an elegant and high-quality design. These handles can be used with uPVC windows or aluminium frames. They work by having a spur that locks over the frame's edge to secure the window. The window handle is lockable so that it only opens when pushed. This adds additional security. The handle is available in five different finishes, both left and right handed. This lets fabricators cater for more windows.

The window handle for the cockspur cockspur comes with three packing pieces that are of different thicknesses. This allows them to be adjusted to a range of sizes for backsets. Each packer can be removed from the handle nose or added to the step size to achieve the desired distance between 9mm and 21mm. The handle is available in right or left handed versions and a straight or curved nose design.

It is important to measure the height of your current handle before purchasing a new handle to make sure it fits correctly. A wrong handle could cause a variety of issues such as the inability to shut the window. This could be a hassle for homeowners and cause stress that is not needed.

A cockspur handle is that is found on older uPVC wood, aluminium and timber windows. These handles don't have windows with integrated locks unlike Espag handles that are used on modern windows. They also come with shootbolts or Espagnolette bar lock.

The espagnolette (often shortened to "espag") handle is the most commonly used type of handle used on the new uPVC casement windows. When you turn the espagnolette handle it activates the Yale Encloser locking system which is more secure than a traditional handle, such as a cockspur or British standard. This is because the handle espagnolette turns several locks to secure the window frame.

Turn and Tilt Handle

These windows are a popular option for those who want to improve the ventilation in their home, while giving an added layer of security. As their name suggests they have a tilt and turn function that permits them to turn at 90 degrees to provide an opening of a smaller size, or drop down to a hopper-style design for complete ventilation. This dual functionality also gives them a unique appearance that can create a real wow factor to the double-glazed windows you have.

Tilt-and-turn windows are more complex than other double-glazed window designs and can cost more in the process of installation. They require more parts and a lot of labor. However, they are worth the investment as they can enhance the value of your home and provide a host of advantages.

The major benefit of these ladders is that they allow you to clean your windows without the need for external ladders. This is ideal for those who live in high rise flats or buildings as it eliminates the need to leave and risk falling from an elevated height. Tilt-and-turn windows provide an additional level of security as they lock when in a tilted state. This means that burglars aren't able to open them from inside.

Often you will find these handles often on European style windows, specifically those in Germany however, you can also get them installed in UK homes. The uPVC replacement handle is usually made of a spindle and has 7mm square spindles which is typically found in lengths of 32mm, 38mm and 44mm. The base of this handle is wider than other handles, which is why it's called a "tilt-safe" window handle. It can only be opened after the window is shut or tilted.

To replace a uPVC window handle that turns and turns, you must first remove the old handle with a screwdriver. The screws are typically hidden behind a spring loaded backplate, simply lift it and twist it to reveal the two screw holes. You can measure the distance between the two screw holes using an instrument such as a ruler or tape measurement device. This will usually be 43mm from centre to center. Once you've got your measurement, you can then order the correct handle size for your uPVC window.

Aluminium Handle

Made of tough diecast aluminium. It is finished in a fashionable look matt-black colour.

Aluminum handles are generally comprised of weatherproof and corrosion-resistant alloys. They are strong enough to meet the requirements of the construction industry. It is easily shaped by industrial metal processing, such as extrusion and forging and offers the flexibility and nearly unlimited design potential.

Furthermore, aluminum is extremely durable and has a great strength-to-weight ratio. It is able to withstand the most severe conditions. It is also immune to the effects of ultraviolet radiation which makes it safe to use indoors. It is also highly versatile and can be colored to suit any style of aesthetic. From classic emulations of hardware metals, to vibrant applications that use hundreds of pure colors, the possibilities are endless.
